Phrasal Verb = A combination of a verb and another word(usually a preposition)that has a different meaning than the verb by itself. For example: "to get" and "to get by" has two different meaning.
Preposition: We commonly use prepositions to show a relationship in space or time or a logical relationship between two or more people, places or things. Prepositions are most commonly followed by a noun phrase or pronoun (underlined):
I live in a house.
The circle is above the square.
The square is below the circle.
to get by: to be able to live or deal with a situation with difficulty, usually by having just enough of something you need, such as money.(link)In another word, it means 'to survive'.
to talk ≠ to talk down
to get ≠ to get up
to talk down: to speak loudly or without stopping to prevent someone else from speaking.(link)

back = the last part of something
to back up = to move backwards
to back something up: make a copy
back-up(noun): Do you have any backup if this machine fails?

to check = to make certain that something is correct
